Ruth This one
Ruth This one is starting Around the World in Eighty Days & Five Weeks in a Balloon
Just started, a book group read. I'm listening on borrowbox, and had to select 1.5x speed as the narration is so leaden. SO far this quote sums it up for me:
"It is easy to understand why he [Phikeas Fog] lived alone and without any social relationships."
Is the reader is supposed to admire this fine upstanding punctulious yet unflappable 'gentleman'? Urgh.
I'll be interested to see if my first impressions hold true

Fascinating book. Yalom is very honest!

Urgh... This is a pilgrimage in more ways than one. Or just an arduous journey with very little hope of meaning at the end. Reading it for a book club or I'd just cut my losses now.

49% and done. This happened and then that happened and then the other. He's a posh ruffian, he's cartoonly nice, she's a caricature, so's she and him too. And really the horses are just a bit much. Don't regret giving it go but more glad to leave it behind. This and all the rest of the Rutshire chronicles.

Vaguely remember reading this in my teens at a similar time to Kane and Able but cld remember no detail. Didn't fancy watching rivals but thought I'd give the first in the series another go. Well I'm surprised. It's like a soap opera before the watershed in the 1980s. Big on back stories. Really not that raunchy. VERY horsey, kind of yes, of course, the clue's in the title etc, but then even so, a lot of horseyness.

I'm 45% through and I don't intend on carrying on. It's not a bad book, but I can just see where it's headed and don't want to spend another 300 pages (or 10 hours + on borrowbox) getting there.

Struggling with this. Listening at 125% just to get through it now. Not that I have no compassion for the life portrayed. Just that if what the author was trying to convey was the notion of an interminable prison sentence through the medium of prose she's succeeding.

Really quite dull. I thought I'd give it another shot, this time on audible, and it's OK. But I'm just not that gripped by the characters or what passes for a plot. I'll finish it this time though.
