Struggling with this. Listening at 125% just to get through it now. Not that I have no compassion for the life portrayed. Just that if what the author was trying to convey was the notion of an interminable prison sentence through the medium of prose she's succeeding.

Read this in brand new hardback when it was published in 1996, having just discovered Margaret Atwood by doing The Handmaid's Tale for A level

And did you like it? It reads very like the handmaid's tale. But the novelty has worn off for me...
I did like it as I recall Ruth but was 17 I can't remember much at all! Big Atwood fan so never tired of her writing yet though the oryx and crake trilogy was less up my street
