Struggling to put it down.The story is heart wrenching and thus far has fantastically told the story of a young girl in Africa who was kidnapped to a slave ship. The author spares no details in the narration of the journey to America, the girl’s impressions upon arrival, and the auction. All perfunctorily covered in school, but the added details fill in an even more horrific picture than I previously imagined.

Interesting and enticing position on how to approach the idea of death… “I love to laugh about death, to make fun of it. It’s my way of putting it down. That way, it pushes its weight around less. By making light of it, I let life have the upper hand, have the power.”

I wasn’t quite so sure about this book when I started. It felt elementary at the time. Now- however- I’m completely invested in the characters and all the details the author began weaving into them at the beginning.
