I think I would find this book a lot more recommendable if it just referred to this side group of characters as Romani. I know, it mostly takes place in 19th century England...but this is a time travel romance, not a hard hitting historical novel. The story is good, and certainly way better than the last time-travel romance I attempted. But these Romani scenes are giving "well meaning white writer" vibes.

You just said you were six months older than her. Stop talking like you are some wise elder. Especially since you act like you have the maturity of a 13 year old.

Which, actually is not great since this is a romance story and who knows how old this dude is supposed to be.

YOU ARE PRETENDING TO BE A NOBLE LADY IN EARLY 1800'S ENGLAND.

This amnesia thing is so stupid. I mean, I dislike amnesia subplots when characters actually have "amnesia" (or the stupid fictional version of it). But a story where the MC is trying to lie about having amnesia...but isn't even putting in the effort to half-ass it, is just tedious. I don't blame the dude for not believing her. A fifth grader would call bullshit on this.

"I tore out five drawings and hid them in my wardrobe. In doing so, I felt like I had cut open my own flesh. I had never damaged my artwork, and it felt wrong."

Oh my gods, woman. You removed a sketch from a sketch book. You didn't tear it to pieces and set it on fire. It is still perfectly fine.

A) She knows she is in the past
B) She has some awareness that class structures are very important here
C) Going up to someone in the hospitality sector in modern times and going "God, I'd hate to have your job! It's so demeaning!" would still be an asshole thing to do.

So why the fuck would she go around talking to a 19th century maid like they are gal pals out a brunch and bitch session?

I'm remembering why I don't read YA much anymore. Everything in this book is so painfully blunt. I'm trying to figure out if the fact I paid money to read this is enough motivation to keep putting up with this completely bland story.

You know what I hate about books like this? It's not the lazy writting/worldbuilding or the "oh I have a boner I must be in love" romance arcs. It's the fact the female protag is such an unlikable caricature of the Ideal Feminist Woman that I keep ending up siding with the patriarchal shitbags.

Like three pages back one of the annoying snots was using his magic to hold his sister over the edge of the roof of this house. He thought it'd be fine because surely she could fly! I'll grant you gifted, but no, ma'am, I will not budge an inch on their so-called intelligence.

And, yes, I am hate reading this book now.

I will never understand people who find things like this charming. Granted, I'm very much in the "please, for the love of all the gods, stop subjecting the rest of us to your annoying children" camp. I was made to be the crotchety old person in these books.

The Not Like Other Girls vibe is strong with this one.

Which actually means that she is in fact like 98% of all romance heroines.

I swear, I can never get more than a month of reading m/f books in before I remember why I tend to stick with queer (and mostly male) protagonists.

Omg, I need someone to write me a crossover fanfic between this book and Downton Abbey, like right now. Dude, I need to see Thomas as the new butler here so badly.

I can't be the only person reading these books and thinking this is what Harry Potter fanfic writers dream they could write? I'm not going crazy, am i? This isn't re-skinned fanfic...but if there isn't some HP in its DNA I'll eat my favorite hat.

These books are great, by the way. You definitely have to be craving a slow, sweet, burn...but they are hitting me just right.

I think one of my biggest pet-peeves about romance books is how easily fully functioning responsible adults will throw away all sense of duty on the off chance that they'll get to fuck.

Hey, time travel writers:

1) No, no it absolutely isn't a film shoot. Google what film shoots look like, for Christ sake.

2) No it is not a reenactment. There is nothing on this god-forsaken earth that could convince me that you'd confuse a real person from the past with someone dressed up in vague approximations of what we /think/ people dressed like back then.

Please try harder.

Is Lila Aleksander a previous character of the author's? B/c I can'tt fathom why so much time is spent giving her pov. I've stopped reading her sections...they feel so unneeded. Having some random character telling us "the 2 MCs are in love" is so boring. If the story has failed to show us this...than having a bystander say it must be true shows at the very least a lack trust in your own storytelling ability.

So...apparently I've read this book before. I even wrote a review. But hand on heart I do not remember a single thing about it. Which is so weird because I've got shit memory for a lot of things, but I've always been incredibly good at remembering stories I've read.

I'm still enjoying the story. But now I'm kinda wondering if I wandered into a parralel universe...and how I might get the fuck out of it.

I'd love to know why 90% of people who write time travel stories are convinced the most interesting thing ever is to have a character determined to not do anything interesting, ever, in hopes of preserving a fictional time line. It's a story, not a theoretical textbook. Do things. Reading I'd a lot more fun if the character isn't constantly whinging about patadoxes and refusing to engage with the world around them

While informative, this author clearly doesn't seem to have any issue with the idea of handing people like Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk our space program on a giant fucking platter. Honestly, the way he is gushing over Musk you'd think they had just spent a romantic weekend together.

Because screw human rights and forcing workers to expose themselves to COVID on meager salaries. CAPITALISM, BABY!!

I don't know if I'm reading way too much into this, but this author seems to have a serious obsession with describing how fat everyone around the main character is. The fat-shaming is rather blatant.

This is so obviously pride and prejudice...in the most predictable (and boring) ways possible. I can only hope the magic element does something interesting, or else this will be yet another in a long line of boring and predictable p&p fanfics out there.

You know, I think it probably is for the best that the movies left out the whole "possible cannibalism" aspect from the story.

I can't tell if the existence of Project Elrond, pre Sean Bean casting, makes the joke worse or not.

Although I could just pretend that Sean Bean's casting is solely the result of this one line in the book. That might make up for my disillusionment.

Took me a while to get into the swing of this book. I adore the movie, so my brain kept getting sidetracked by trying to smoosh the book and movie narratives together, which was a bit distracting. But it's evened out now. On the plus side, having seen the movie makes visualizing things a lot easier. Especially when it comes to the look of equipment.
