Whitney Moore is starting Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths
Something has gone wrong on my Goodreads account, because 2024 Reading Challenge doesn't know I'm here, reading away. I will continue to read and post reviews as I go along, but my 2024 Reading Challenge won't calculate, and I don't know how to fix it. Any suggestions ?!?

Just so you know, my Friends on Goodreads, I have a new computer that Goodreads must not recognize (or something) because I was unable to post my review of Cause Unknown. I did just post it on Amazon Books, however, so you can read my review there. It was very short to simply say that I recommend it highly.

A friend gave us this book, perhaps the best example of "SHOW, DON'T TELL" that I have ever read. It's a magnificent work of research and powerful -- and heartbreaking. Take a very deep breath before you start.

Whitney Moore is starting The Return of the Gods
Just started this -- after completing Harbinger 2 by the same author. This book does not appeal to me as much as Cahn's Harbinger volumes did... so far anyway...

About halfway through, and it has revived my interest in Fitz and Hem and that whole crowd. Fun to return to them since 1971, when we as newlyweds identified with Zelda and Scott. Now, after 50 years of marriage (30 in 12-Step recovery), it is easy to see why. Grateful we were retrieved from that "glam land" which was not all it was cracked up to be!

I have just started this book and have stopped to say that the first three paragraphs are astonishing -- a magnificent compression of complicated facts; a huge clarification. Many pages lie ahead, but if I stopped now and never read past these first three paragraphs, I would still say this book makes a huge contribution to the world.

Whitney Moore is starting The Little Prince
This edition was printed in too tiny a typeface, so I took a brief detour that turned out to be fabulous (just posted my review of "They Both Die at the End"). I am returning to "The Little Prince" now. Both of these books urge the reader to cherish time and use it well (my favorite subject). For some strange reason, my Kindle thinks I finished reading both editions, but not true! An aging Kindle ?!?

This is a GOOD read, creatively told. I took a detour from "The Little Prince" which (coincidentally) is on the same subject, but was falling a little flat for me, given the urgency of the wake-up call we are getting from COVID-19. This book is not falling even a little bit flat. I will return to "The Little Prince" after I've finished reading this "coincidence."

How did I ever manage to not read this tome?!? It is such a rollicking romp: silly, foppish, just plain hilarious. Satire at its best, in my view. I'm having so much fun reading this First Part that forgot to post my review of "The Holy War" by John Bunyan, which I will do right now.

Whitney Moore is starting The Yeats Reader: A Portable Compendium of Poetry, Drama, and Prose
I have taken a detour into reading poetry, which I started to need when COVID-19 showed up to ruin everything. "Paradise Regained" led me to naming our new dog "Milton." I then embarked to collect poems that are my personal favorites, and it's turned out to be quite a project! I first surveyed Emily Dickinson and am now onto Yeats with this volume on loan from our son. It's like mining for gold!

I decided to re-read this poem after experiencing it as indecipherable gibberish the first time through, at approximately the halfway point. Reading poetry on my Kindle is always challenging, because it re-formats the lines and, in this case, it also randomly inserted line numbers, which was disconcerting. I will post a review of this, as I am out of space here.

I'm halfway into Round Two, as my first read-through went beautifully until, quite suddenly, I didn't understand much of anything at all. I can't remember where this occurred, so I am reading it again and starting to think my comprehension melted down when we adopted a dog and total discombobulation ensued. So, I decided to try it again -- and (so far), so good.

I needed poetry the night before we went looking to adopt a dog. Was so wound up, I could not sleep, so I ordered a Kindle sample of "Paradise Regained" by John Milton. My husband slept through the night, never knowing I was up reading Milton. When we actually found the DOG we were meant for, I asked my husband what he thought for a name. He paused and said (out of the clear blue sky), "How about Milton?" MILTON!

Whitney Moore is finished with The Abolition of Man
I forgot to post a review of this excellent book because it led me away into its companion piece, a fictional portrayal of the same subject matter --namely, human hubris and what C.S. Lewis calls "the Curse of Babel." I am grateful for both versions, as they expose the futility of human effort absent the Guidance of God. Lewis lampoons it in the fiction (hilariously!) and slashes it with lucid logic in this version.

Detouring from this book in order to read another (and then another and another) was a mistake, because returning to it was a challenge. Three times, I had to re-read the first chapter, finally making a list to keep things straight. Quite possibly, I have overdosed on popes and plagues; I do openly confess my low tolerance for working this hard to read for pleasure. That said, I'm abandoning ship. Book overboard!
