this book is kinda boring so far :-/

has to be the coziest, goriest romance book I have ever read

continuing to read this book reminds me to celebrate differences that exist in us as human beings; women, as this book tries to describe, exist as beings who have deep, deep emotions as it relates to friendships. I treasure each one of my surviving friends as I grow; and while I celebrate the simplicity that male friendships afford, I feel grateful to have my female friends (and trans and queers included) as well.

there's a lot of real, tangible solutions in this book that i'm taking note of. trusting your gut is one; getting to the root of a problem & not being sidetracked with past grievances or issues; not being accusatory. a solution that many of the friendship-enders have come to is writing a letter; from experience, this usually doesn't work as well as having a phone call or face to face talk. more later.

The good so far- worldbuilding. The gods are so intensely personal. The theme of Yeine being mixed race. Jemisin's direct writing.
The bad- this book takes way too long to get rolling. Yeine comes to the palace with no expectations & no plan. Every amount of a vessel the gods make her to be. Wish she had more agency or the book focused on her grieving her mother rather her wandering for half the novel

as cozy and heartfelt and poignant as Sangu's first book. different characters, but same amount of loveability. instead of a grumpy man with a heart of gold matching with a woman made of rainbows and sunbeams, this one features too grumpsters who reluctantly help each other after years and years of bad luck and misfortune on the woman's part. very very fun and sweet.

I may have to put this down for now. Not sure why these main characters don't stick out to me as much as the ones in the previous book, really. but the mystery hook & Maud's moral obligation just really isn't bringing me in as much as I thought it would. Maid is also admittedly kinda boring :-/

egh. actually? might have to put this one down. not that I'm not interested in this unconventional fantasy-epic, but the "comedy" really is wearing thin on me. I've read some novels with a fair bit of comedy in it in the past and barely any of these jokes seem to be... hitting for me? like, every time ranbles on for too long and tries to make a cute aside I dissociate for a bit. but the characters are cool.

it's like Hench but slightly more annoying and way more unhinged. Not bad.
