I definitely like Greek myths better than Roman ones. Not entirely sure why, but I'm wondering if the Roman ones seem a bit more misogynistic or I don't like the morals being taught in some other way. Like, really Pygmalion, what moral does your story teach?

I really liked the first book, but I don't remember it all that well but this has a new main character - the love interested of the previous mc, and I'm just not so certain about him.

I've always known that myths contain a great deal of adult content. I was not still quite prepared for Plutarch's version of the birth of Romulus and Remus, which involves a wicked king finding a phallus in his hearth. A phallus about which there are prophecies.

Disconcerting, yet understandable: The illustrations are from historical sources. For Ancient Greek myths, many of them are by medieval and Renaissance painters. It's slightly odd seeing Oedipus in distinctly 14th century attire, or a painting of Andromeda, from Aethiopa in Africa, nude - with pale skin and strawberry blonde hair. So far: Weird, literary, and somewhat crass. I think it's all those things in a good way, but sometimes I'm uncertain.
Just to be clear, however, the very first paragraph contains a sensual description of picking up dog poop.

This reads like it's trying to be a textbook titled _Comparative Mythology: Aspects of the Divine Feminine_. It's slow but meaningful. I've tried to read it before, but didn't get very far in. It's a bit obtuse and sometimes I have to say "yeah, that's a bit of a stretch." Still seems like a worthwhile read for anyone with a serious interest in mythology.

Good writing, with humor and adventure, but I guess I'm just not feeling the whole vampires/demons/violence theme right now.

I'm really enjoying this. I grew up on D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, but it's been a long time since I've comprehensively read through it. This is much more adult. The sexual content is not censored, and there is much foundation in research, with frequent references to original sources.

I've had some trouble getting into this but it's getting more engaging as I go.
Due to my admiration of both Buffy the Vampire Slayer *and* Kiersten White, I may have had my expectations set a little too high.

Cory Doctorow: Never easy, always worthwhile. Not the kind of book I'd think I'd like - technical, difficult, political. I don't think you'd have much luck with this unless you're internet/tech savvy. There's words/concepts I have to look up. Occasionally, I don't bother with puzzling through an explanation of how something works. A lot of philosophizing. Very alt-2017. But still amazing.

Deep division between diverse groups of people, however, which is what this is focusing on. Not so much (or any so far) with the romance. Started telling from Cameron's point of view in some chapters. (Were they doing that in last book?) Relies heavily on emotional investment from previous books. If you're still invested in the characters, you'll be fine. Otherwise will lose some of its spark from previous books.

Nice blend of features from a number of genres. Some familiar from historical fiction: royalty, noble houses, courtly intrigue, and they even went on progress (last I saw that was in Phillipa Gregory). However, clearly set in a future version of America (now a number of different countries). Technology is different. Magic powers have evolved.

Often with literary style books, particularly the weird ones, I have trouble maintaining interest, but this is not becoming dull. The citations continue to bother me but not as much, because I looked it up: some are real, some are not.

This book is stupid. Our girl's big secret dream? To get married! I don't understand The Ocean (as portrayed here). I think "Her" sort-of character is just... filling a plot hole. I also don't understand salt dresses. Dresses... made of salt? How does that work exactly?
