I’m fully hypnotized by this author’s writing and ideas oh my godddddddd basically nothing is happening but I’m still hooked. This book is like a dark, dangerous corruption arc but the “corruption” is a woman learning how to love herself brazenly and beautifully in a society that believes women should be quiet and full of shame. Eager to see how it all play out.

The protag is so blisteringly derivative and such an embarrassingly obviously a self-insert for the author that her publishing this novel feels like a therapy-mandated humiliation ritual lol

Keep having to take breaks because every other story hits like a freight train. Not a collection for the faint of heart.

It’s very funny but the plot/tension is so lifeless it needs to be brought out behind the barn and put out of their misery. Things are happening but nothing is moving FORWARD, it’s all just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. At least Douglass Adams doesn’t ATTEMPT a plot, he’s just absurdism all the way down. Still, I had so much fun in the first 100ish pgs so I’m hopeful it can rally.

every time I pick up a new book in this series I think to myself “maybe Seregil will have a good time in this one” and every time Lynn Flewelling has cooked up a new and even more terrible way for him to suffer it makes me SICK. You have a TWISTED mind Ms Flewelling!!!!! Get your grubby hands away from my beautiful princess!!!!!!!!!

it’s really remarkable that in a 600 page book the middle 1/3rd is nine thousand pages long

this book is driving me up the wall for many reasons but the thing I’m finding the most frustrating is the INSANE use of ellipses. In TOG Maas used the m-dash like 30 times on one page and so far in ACOTAR she’s using ellipses almost just as gratuitously. On 1 page, “I felt…sorry for him,” and “I tried not to balk at the thought of touching him, but… I didn’t let myself give in” what does this add??

fighting for my LIFE to remember what happened in book one dear Lord this is like starting Twelfth Night in the final act. Like he’s him but he’s also him, but she thinks he’s that other guy, and she HATES him but actually they’re friends—help me.

reading this to stave off the insanity of going like 6 weeks before the next Stormlight book is available at my library. It’s fine so far. I miss Shallan.

a lot of this is falling really, really flat. This book is sorta disenchanting the first one for me :( the author seems to be introducing ideas whimsically as they occur to her, writing scenes and dialogue with no larger plan or intention whatsoever. Plot points are started and completely forgotten immediately. The Seregil/Alec relationship hits tho, 10/10, 5-stars. This series should be a supercut of just them.

Almost worse than over sexualizing every woman character to an almost clownish degree, the book’s plot is often times driven forward by women behaving “irrationally” and “recklessly” so that the protagonist has to swoop in to save them and himself from their “dumb” (usually rational, given the info they have, which isn’t much bc protag refuses to communicate) decisions. I think I hate this book.

This is some fedora-tipping, m’lady, ‘women are all dumb seductresses who try to have real careers isn’t that so cute’ type trash. Unfortunately, it’s otherwise incredibly interesting and funny and well-written and my ideal novel so I will probably read the entire series. Ugh.

clocking 31% when last time I was at 20% might seem redundant but pls remember that this book is 1.3M words long

this is a great YA fantasy novel and could have been written for me specifically. I wish I had had this book when I was 14. This is also one of the only dragons rider books I’ve found that treats dragons RESPECTFULLY with the riders introducing the dragons as “my companion in arms” instead of saying “my dragon” which is a HUGE pet peeve of mine.
