“… shame that her mother was dead and she could not ask her for advice …” this one item in the whole list of the full sentence felt like a particular sucker punch and especially visceral

“From ‘consumable’ to indigestible” about “consumables”, ie end products & items used by people in everyday life with a higher degree of disposability ending up in the oceans and consequently whales’ digestive systems, causing mortality… Giggs’ writing is insane, in the best way. Incredible.

I get his overall point, but depicting orcas instead as frightening beings akin to killing machines to the degree of perceived irrationality can’t be the way to try to lessen people’s fear of sharks. This bit’s a tad hypocritical in my opinion.

Ellen is finished with The Deep: The Hidden Wonders of Our Oceans and How We Can Protect Them
“Overall, the ocean has absorbed an astonishing 93% of the excess heat trapped in the atmosphere by greenhouse gas emissions over the last 50 years. One group of scientists has estimated that if this excess heat was to be instantaneously transferred to the atmosphere it would lead to a temperature increase of 36°C. Under such conditions most of life on Earth could not survive”. SCIENCE!!! OCEANS!!!

“[...] society’s first fear about sharks should be losing them, not being harmed by them. Society should use its fear of losing sharks to make sure they survive to protect the reefs and seagrasses around the world. [...] When a shark’s dorsal fin breaks the surface, we should breathe a sigh of relief that the waters are healthy”

The depictions of overfishing and its devastating effect on shark populations, let alone the shark finning and torture it entails for the animals in tandem with fishing, is utterly harrowing. Everybody not sustainably fishing for themselves/locally needs to dramatically cut their consumption; this is beyond alarming.

“It was a young shark, [...] too young to ever have bred. Because the minimum weight requirement for the tournament was 175 pounds, the shark was disqualified. It died for nothing.” I HATE men – this entire segment is so disturbing and saddening to read, trophy hunting at sea needs to be persecuted. How can you value a species’ life as cheaply/not at all as these men do the sharks’? ABOMINABLE “hobby”.

The blatant irony of a stereotype against women being we’re “too emotional/hysterical” when these men will literally go on murder sprees just because they’re “virgins/women don’t want to f*ck” them. God, this is a terrifying read.

Ellen
Ellen is on page 151 of 336 of The Lost Whale: The True Story of an Orca Named Luna
It’s fascinating that L-98/Luna belonged to the threatened population of Southern Residents yet there was evidently talk of potentially killing this whale for its “disturbance” or “destruction” of property like seaplanes and the like. To me, this epitomizes people’s ability to recognize our effect on wildlife but lack of commitment, lack of motivation to cut back on their own standards for conservation.
