Melissa Auf der Maur is exactly who I thought she was, but so much more perceptive and compassionate. I know this story well, but this telling is so tender and fiercely feminist—not performative, but practiced, *lived*, I keep putting it down to cry.

i’m all it’s going to take some effort to put this down and get some sleep.

not yet sure why this got so many mixed reviews.

who is this guy?! I had to look him up to see what his qualifications are. apparently, he’s an expert in ethics, moral responsibility and professional ethics, has a Ph.D in Philosophy from Leeds, where he’s the director of something and corporations pay him to tell them right from wrong. I can’t believe someone gets paid to do that!

more difficult than i imagined. one of my kids told me our book club would be destined for failure if this was our first selection. he might be right. 😕

beware! induces dissociative fugue

cracked it open this evening to see why i gave it 3 stars. mon dieu! it’s dense. did i really read this when i was 25? poor baby me. subjecting myself to fusty old tomes and obtuse art house Films in my youth didn’t make me smarter, it just gave me a high tolerance for the immediate gratification of sex, drugs and violence in my old age. at least i’ve had enough sense to save the russians for my death bed.

this is a tough read. i’m not sure i can stick with it.

so quietly beautiful, it snuck up on me. i didn’t even know i was invested in these characters until my ears were full of tears.

this book got very boring, very fast. it might be better if you’ve been never done any drugs or aren’t aware that hallucinogens are the most promising treatment for depression and anxiety.

i had about 50 pages to go and decided to read a few reviews and now i’m too frightened to continue. i don’t need all of that today.

i don’t trust people who’ve never done mind-altering drugs. i think it’s incurious and cowardly to choose to view all of existence through such a myopic lens.

“the kid might have been alright if there’d been a gun to his head every second of his life.” i wonder if joy realizes he’s borrowing this line from flannery o’connor (A Good Man is Hard to Find) or thinks he wrote it himself.

I haven’t made it past the introduction, but it occurs to me, not unbidden, that anyone wishing to distance the riot grrrl movement from any association with Courtney Love and Nirvana should probably stop invoking their names at the beginning of any conversation attempting to “set the record straight.”
