My goodness, what a book.

The Hobbes translation is a delightful read—but given my lack of familiarity with 17th century English prose, it proved taxing to my philistine understanding. After book I I switched to Rex Warner's translation, which was easier to read for the purposes of study. One of these days I'll go back and savor every one of Hobbes' 6- and 7-comma sentences.

This past week I began a teaching internship at a small private classical school, tagging along with juniors who are studying American history and literature. Which is great, because there are all of these works of "Classic American Literature" that I, for whatever reason, have completely missed. (I blame gifted education methodologies that dominated the early 2000s.) Gatsby is the first of the semester.
