I remember reading this book at my local B&N over the course of a afternoon or two, shortly after it came out. Quite enjoyed it. Then, perhaps two years ago I read the omnibus collections of the comics and absolutely loved them.

Thought I'd revisit the novel almost 20 years after I read it the first time, and am once again thrilled to be in Mike Mignolas world.

Engaging read so far. Wish I would have had the opportunity amongst my years of field research to actually work in a museum of substantial size and reputation.

Wishing the first 2 chapters had been a book all on its own. Reminded me of some of the pulp stories of jungle adventure and body horror of the pre-WW2 Weird Tales days.

Cussler writes some of the worst dialogue I have ever read.

I don't think Clive Cussler was ever accused of being a great writer of literature, but I've forgotten just how comically bad he often is. These old books dont age well either.

Pitts first interaction with a woman is joking about sexual assault, slapping her for still grieving her dead husband and then sleeping with her. All within 1 page.

A lot of short story gems in this book. I'm especially enjoying reading all the Conrad and Kirowan occult detective stories.

Really enjoying this book. Been a fan of Candice Millard's writing style since I received an advance copy of River of Doubt shortly before its publication many years ago.

I'm only about 1/3 way through, so I can't yet say that I prefer it over the excellent River of Doubt, but I'm already leaning towards liking it more than the quite good, young Winston Churchill biography, Hero of the Empire.
