Cussler writes some of the worst dialogue I have ever read.

I don't think Clive Cussler was ever accused of being a great writer of literature, but I've forgotten just how comically bad he often is. These old books dont age well either.

Pitts first interaction with a woman is joking about sexual assault, slapping her for still grieving her dead husband and then sleeping with her. All within 1 page.

A lot of short story gems in this book. I'm especially enjoying reading all the Conrad and Kirowan occult detective stories.

Really enjoying this book. Been a fan of Candice Millard's writing style since I received an advance copy of River of Doubt shortly before its publication many years ago.

I'm only about 1/3 way through, so I can't yet say that I prefer it over the excellent River of Doubt, but I'm already leaning towards liking it more than the quite good, young Winston Churchill biography, Hero of the Empire.
