Can we forsake the love triangle and get on with the fortune hunt? I feel like I’m not the ideal reader for this book.

“It was as if Melmoth’s remarks went around what he wanted to say in strange lines; his remarks seemed long-winded but not crazy.”
Ironic that the author writes this about one of the sheep, because that’s how this whole book is striking me. It’s about to drive me nuts. Still, I would like to know “whodunnit” even if most of the time I don’t even know what’s happening.

I don’t understand the 4.5 star rating. The storyline is gripping—and it’s based on a true story. But just because a story is gripping and true, doesn’t mean than any author can do it justice. I’m trying to reimagine the story with better writing (so much telling instead of showing; flat characters, though they’re supposedly real) and editing (I think I edited this comment more than they edited the book).

There is simply nothing like Charlotte Brontë. Rereading this one because I need rich, elegant, and lovely language to savor.

I have yet to decide if I’m going to finish this book. It’s soooooo sloooooooow moving and pretty pretentious. I mean, I love Italy, and some of the descriptions are gold, but this book is just not holding my interest. I hate to not finish a book though…

Not impressed so far. The characters feel flat—not that they don’t have personality. They do. That’s the problem. They all have the SAME personality: obnoxious jerks who can’t respect authority. The writing is funny—for the first three pages. Then it’s too much. He’s trying too hard to make me laugh. I should’ve been warned off by Ove, but my sister recommended it to me and, well, I like my sister.
