so only neema says "i'm sorry" to cain (even though i don't even think she's at fault)? and cain gets away with a vague apology that ends on "you hurt my feelings btw"? and we're not gonna talk about how cain hurt neema's feelings or cain's hypocrisy and entitlement in wanting neema to leave her entire life and career behind to run away with him? oh okay. it's really easy to be a man huh.

the way neema has been treated is so ridiculously unfair, like why has everyone been acting as if she personally ordered the exile??? i just don't understand all this animosity towards her. also, i want to like cain more but as a love interest, he needs to step it the fuck up.

at this point i think i'm only reading because of how popular this series is.

maybe enemies-to-lovers isn't for me bc. you hear the daughter of this brutally colonizing empire insulting and demeaning your oppressed refugee people and your response is....wanting to have sex with her?
(the sexual tension is very well written tho).

is it just me or does everyone who's ever hurt ali just get away with it? ali apologized up and down to jamshid and jamshid never bothered to say even a tiny little sorry for fucking POISONING him. and nahri just learned about this and didn't even show MILD anger on ali's behalf???? just a 'damn jamshid you're so stupid you could've been caught.' god i need to get ali OUT OF HERE.

someone needs to get me into this book so i can whack jamshid. blaming ali for muntadhir's death??? if he, as muntadhir's on and off lover, is grieving muntadhir so much, what does he think ali, muntadhir's BROTHER, is doing????? jamshid when i catch you...

kinda wish this book could've forgone the need for a woman to have a chaperone. like these two are having a deeply emotional pivotal moment and there's this third person hovering behind them 😭

so vis just learned who his family's direct murderer is and decides that "violence is no answer to grief." man. i mean kudos to a 17yo whose family got murdered only 3 years ago for being so bafflingly mature i guess.

struggling to understand vis as a fantasy protagonist. his family, country, way of life were completely destroyed by the empire resulting in his disdain for....the resistance to the empire. he despises the hierarchy and is offered a pathway for revenge against it but his solution is to....just run away from it. interesting.

huh. so far this book has been portraying the rebellion as extremely violent and evil (at least from one perspective). hopefully things change and the plot surprises me.
