Well paced.

This book is excellent if you're a struggling writer, because the protag of the novel is exactly that, and he offers up every single mind game and road block that potential writers wrestle with. It's therapeutic to read your neurosis shared on the paged; to see that you're not alone in the struggle. The magic is that he turned his struggle into a book, and a pretty funny one at that.

This poor man is miserable.

Dude is miserable. He takes way too much comfort from the misfortunes of others.

I work part-time as a cashier at CVS so I was keen to read this book. Our narrator is a middle-aged out of work journalist who currently works at a bookstore in Los Angeles. Dude had me at "do you need a bag?" The things customers say, the thoughts I have, things that happen in the store...truly, you have to be there, and this guy gets it because he's been there. Some hilariously funny stuff, too.

Damn. I don't know about that ending. I wonder why the author chose that?

Heiser's whole point seems to be that there are things in the Bible that we cannot understand because we do not have the supernatural world view of those who wrote the Bible. Seems simple enough.

Now he's trying to convince the reader that there are many elohims (gods) in the Bible and that authors of OT books knew this and intended the reader to be aware. But there is only ONE Elohim above all other gods. Save.

He's hanging out in Pakistan in 1975 buying enough junk to keep an addict happy. What world is this?

The romance portion of the story has kicked in. I'm enjoying it and the parallel time lines.

Slow going but that's okay because it's worth it to invest in God's word. I know this book isn't the bible but there are plenty of scriptures to dig into.

We are now revisiting territory. So frustrating because I know nothing new will be revealed, and how many ways can you circle back in a story without resolution? I can't imagine how Zac's parents feel.

This book is a classic example of why we need to be good Bereans. I'm searching out the things he talks about and that's good. Here's my question right now: why are we talking about Athirat (a Canaanite goddess) and Ugarit (an extinct Semitic language closely related to Hebrew)? What does that have to do with seeing the Bible through an ancient reader's eyes?
