I feel gutted at this moment, like someone just ran over me with a truck. I'm feeling so bad for Xiomara. Something is seriously wrong with her mom.

The power of a good author, to make me feel like I'm living what Xiomara is going through. Acevedo is goood with her words. They make me feel all the emotions, all the vulnerability, all the beauty. I'm floored.

So far, this book feels so authentic to what a young teen girl would feel, the thoughts and feelings we all have at that age, the confusion, the rebelliousness, the struggle to be understood and heard.

"My brother says I don't talk enough so he hoped this notebook would give me a place to put my thoughts.

This was the first time someone gave me a place to collect my thoughts. In some ways, it seemed like he was saying that my thoughts were important. From that day forward I've written every single day. Sometimes it seems like writing is the only way I keep from hurting."

Really loving this. Some of the words are so beautiful and visual and come from the heart. I wish it wasn't so blasphemous though. It's making me want to stop reading this.

(2 of 2 / cont.) In my defense, I avoided reading the synopsis and also didn't realize that Camino was the first name of one of the girl narrators. I've never heard this name before, especially for a girl (the word being masculine) and it did not help that it means way, road, path... a bit confusing, making me have to go back and skim through majority of verses to sort of get the story back on track for me.

I feel so dumb. Halfway through the book and I barely realized there are two narrators. No wonder I kept getting confused about where this took place, why the character would say one thing and a few pages later it would be something totally opposite.

I really think my mom was the first taco artist. Sixty years ago she put a hot dog in a tortilla and handed it to me. The first time someone handed me a hot dog on a bun didn't happen until I was seven years old. I took one look at the bun and was like, "What the hell is this? This isn't a tortilla."
