i think i know a little too much about rtd era doctor who to get 100% behind the analysis here. i do generally agree with garside's main sweeping points, but if, for instance, you're gonna argue that the doctor is ace (yes!!!), calling his relationship with rose 'queerplatonic' is a weird way of doing it, they don't fit that at all. i also don't like the way ten's treatment of martha is talked about in here

i got about halfway through this last july and then two things happened at once: i got a job(!!!) and someone else reserved the library copy i was reading so i couldn't renew it and had to return it. but that library copy is finally back in my hands and i am finally actually reading this book!!!!!! even if i'm having to start again from the beginning because it's been so long lol

You know when something happens in a book, and it paints a picture of how the rest of it's going to go, and you just Know that the rest of your reading experience will be a storm of second-hand embarrassment and horror at a certain character's actions? Yeah. That.

and again with a male character, which shows that really it’s just bad writing. sarah, honey, people don’t tend to call their chests ‘muscled’ in their internal monologue unless they’re specifically thinking about their appearance. which in that scene he very much was not. i’m done for today

it’s fascinating how such a female author has ended up describing her female protagonist in a way that men who can’t write would’ve done. all she’s doing is getting into a car! why are you telling me now that her legs are waxed and golden? we already know that she’s got a tan! is her lack of leg hair and the exact shade of the skin on her leg about to become a plot point? you didn’t need to describe her legs!

I've been dying to read this for ages because it sounded so similar to Erased (which is basically my favourite thing), and while this is definitely entertaining, it's not as good as Erased
