Chapter 12. Stephen is a tedious but necessary character. If my dad and my dad's dad hadn't been changed by this book and I didn't feel a part of myself spiritually tethered to it I would probably give up around this point. By persisting through Stephen's rambling about Anne Hathaway and Thomas Aquinas, Bloom's simple way of being in the world becomes so much more compelling.

He liked English though – the poems and all. The novels were fuckin shite. What did they have to study Jane Austen for? She had nothing to do with anything. Until he saw the film on the telly, Shane had thought Pride and Prejudice was about an attack on a gay rights march.

Seems to be out of print but I managed to procure a DRM ebook on a small bookseller called 'Kortext' for three quid. I can't even put it on my ereader, so I'm going to have to read this entire book on my laptop!

This book is really about why reading is better than browsing the internet. Entire generations have been raised in their developmental years on a hyperlinked information diet. This habit changes the structure of the brain to resemble a sorting algorithm that simply cannot handle depth.

On the train to Northampton now listening to the audiobook this time! There’s no way you can read this book once and not have ever been to the place it’s set in
