I seldom re-read favorites, the love is so often deeply tied to a specific experience in a specific point in time. Still, it was available on my Libby and I was curious how I'd feel as an adult rather than teenager. Main note in this listen through, Ng transitions between time periods and character perspectives so smoothly it's very impressive.

A blatant name mixup slipping through is a frustrating example of how traditional commercial publishers are continuously leaving even their most consistently acclaimed and successful authors out to dry in terms of editing (not to mention the overworked, underpaid editors). Luckily Cosby is a great enough writer to overcome this, but his editor deserves the time to put the full proper care his book deserves.

Started this on the assertion by Laura Crone "this book whips so fucking hard" and Cosby being maybe the most acclaimed thriller writer working today and uh, yeah gotdamn

Rachel's self-destructive, short-sighted tendencies can occasionally strain credulity and I'm uncertain of how some issues are being handled (internalized misogyny, racial profiling) but hey, this is an actual book with clear purpose and voice. Knowing where it's all headed gives better insight into what Hawkins is saying, even if the foreshadowing to the twist is quite blatant (then again, I know it already).

After suffering through The Woman in the Window, I felt obligated to pick this back up after struggling with it when it was the biggest book in the world and just watching the movie which featured fantastic performances in an otherwise phoned-in cash-grab adaptation. The reason I struggled is certainly being a teen who didn't care to read about messy adults. It may just be my last read, but I'm quite enjoying this.

If Mr. Daniel Mallory had much of an original thought during the writing process, it wasn't one applying to his novel.

Most of the time, I'd advise against referencing other pieces of media, especially direct or indirect influences. Best case scenario, it's cute but distracting, worst case scenario, I'd rather be engaging with that work. Yes I've also seen Rear Window and Gaslight and now I wish I was watching those instead of reading this, and thanks for the reminder I still need to read and watch Rebecca.

I thought it'd be funny to listen to another dumb popcorn thriller at work and now I'm committed to another one of these for 12½ more hours of my life lmao
