A bit more challenging than Smith's other books, but still vividly written and brilliantly argued. This is my fourth Smith book, and I'm not done!

Legendary. And the little literary moments are fantastic. “The *Times* it was a changin’.” Loved it. I definitely plan to read everything Robert Caro has written. I’m almost three books in.

Love this writer. Third book of his I’ve read. Cited Stanley Fish as a prepublication reviewer; I’m not surprised: contains Fishian levels of incisiveness. Review coming.

Very moving. I knew only the highlights of the story. It was so interesting to travel to a time when the results of the Civil Rights movement were uncertain in everyone's eyes.

Engaging (is Wilson ever boring?) but a little thin. Wilson, to his credit, is able to weigh the benefits and detriments of different English Bible translations rather than simply proclaiming one to be best and all the others to be execrable. He acknowledges the readability difficulties caused by the KJV. White does fine, but this format puts him at a disadvantage: Wilson is clearly the better communicator.

Harrowing. Beautiful lines everywhere. This is an incredible read, and not just because of the story.

Diligent concatenation of stories of anti-Christian liberal prejudice in the modern West. Not one is new to me. Illuminating parallels drawn to witch hunts of the past. No Matthew 5:12 or 5:38–42 so far. Hence: whiny. So far.

A little too much claiming so far and not enough demonstrating. But I’m predisposed to agree with his thesis that liberalism is failing because it contained the seeds of its own demise, so I hope he becomes more persuasive and a bit less oracular. I’m enjoying this overall and profiting from it.
