I should love this book, but the main character is paper thin and nothing makes sense, especially how the characters act and interact.

It also feels like it's trying to be a very deep book, but for me it totally fails at that. I'm bored.

wtf is Nell's problem? Why would you WANT your brother to be a reckless, anger-driven asshole?

Going to dnf this one. It's beautifully written, but I can't handle reading about a character pursuing a child so he can add her to his collection of horribly abused children.

The fact that there really are such vapid, selfish, ridiculous people out there makes me sad for humanity

I dunno, man. The writing is a little weirdly paced to me, and Radford seems like a condescending ass and Clara too much a "not like other girls" girl.

I like the romance in this series, but the overall plot of the book is so *slow* that I find it irritating.

I like the book but damn is the narrator making it difficult. Her cadence never changes from n character to character, and is really grating.

Jack Parsons references: cool.

But why does the only person who knows something bad is happening not doing a damned thing to help?

For a book about magic, its been a slow slog. I'm considering calling it quits with this one.

There are good bones here, but the story is fairly juvenile and meanders far too much. Also the magic system is extremely inconsistent. I do not believe someone could actually lift hundreds of gallons of water from deep in the ground

I hate being nitpicky usually, but the author keeps making certain word choices that just throw me out of the flow of the story. Like saying that it was obvious a car driving on the snow had zigzagged across the “field” which meant they were having a hard time staying on the road. A road is not a field? What?

Also I’m pretty sure I already know what’s happening, which is a little disappointing.

Is the gun a shotgun or a rifle? Because it can’t be both but I don’t think the author knows that.

I’ve realized that part of my problem with this book and the other in the series that I’ve read is the lack of description. Everything is very vague, and so what should be a creepy manor is just not much of anything. It gives the book a very disconnected air, which maybe should work with fairy tales and dreams, but doesn’t fit me.

Nope this is bad. Great idea, terrible execution. The dialogue is stilted and flat and it just…it’s bad. Twenty minutes after being revived from some kind of cold storage and they are “flirting” and talking about sexualities?

So bad

I really wish people demanded actually well-written LGBT books instead of this dreck.

Not starting out too well. Lots of showing, uneven world building and already a big plot hole ( a thief breaking into a god’s most sacred temple and only has to deal with one guard? What?)

This book is such a train wreck. I don’t mind inclusion, but maybe Wendig should consider including a character with some fucking intelligence?

I mean, demonic apples are taking over the world, and Calla’s father is trying to find her so he can turn/sacrifice her, so her best idea is to go back to school?

wtf

I don’t think that Flynn is a misogynist because she writes women as villains. I *do* think she is because every description of a woman other than Libby so far has been fat, frizzy, frumpy etc. Every single woman is described negatively.

No thanks. 👎

This one just isn’t working for me. Nothing feels original or compelling and some of it is just off. Vis is far too much of a Gary Stu, and I cannot buy that in a highly hierarchical society, the Quintus just treats him so casually. Feels flawed and mostly boring.

Post modernist loving, drug addicted urban hipsters would normally send me running from a book, but so far I am enjoying this one. The only quibble so far is fridging one of the characters so the others can take the magic pill.
