There is so much preaching and moralising in this book I'm not sure there's even a plot. If I didn't have a horrible habit of Finishing Every Book I Start No Matter What I would've quit by page 2.

Ok, it's not a scifi and it's not about The Female Man. It's a feminist manifesto ca. 1973. Not a bad one, but not what i wanted or expected to be reading. At the very least i wanted a STORY!

I feel like I'm reading one of joyce carol oates's first novels: i can't tell who or even WHAT the narrator is at any given time, the plot is scattered or maybe nonexistent, and i am completely uninvested ://

I... didn't realise this was one of those proto "sinful woman repents; is punished nonetheless" stories that would be so popular 20-30 years later. I was excited about Trilby (and every other "bad" woman I guess) because she's unashamed and proud of her work! And all it takes is one bleeding heart naive painter to turn her into a nun. Isn't that always the fuckin way!

Lo! Abbott's haphazard writing style begins working against her in earnest! All attempt at linear narrative is abandoned, and I'm pretty sure I'm just reading phrases she scrawled down while brainstorming now :)

This writing style is over the top, sensationalist, the approach is needlessly confusing (I thought the point was to *remove* some of the confusion surrounding gypsy rose lee??), guess this was on a free pile for a reason

The only person in this book I don't hate is Rebecca, maybe cause she's dead
