Is it wrong to say that a book with such premise is truly adorable? Repetitive, oh yes, but it rings in your veins. I wonder if I can be surprised with anything here.

MY CORPSE and I
understand each other marvelously
my corpse asks me: do you believe in God?
and I respond with a hearty NO
my corpse asks: do you believe in the government?
and I respond with a punch in the face
then he gets up out of his coffin
and we go arm in arm to the altar

The Nobel Prize for Reading
should be awarded to me
I am the ideal reader,
I read everything I get my hands on:
I read street names
and neon signs
bathroom walls
and new price-lists
/---/
for a person like me
the word is something holy
/---/
I read everything I don't even skip the classifieds
/---/
that's why I'm asking you to give me
the Nobel Prize for Reading
as soon as impossible.

The English translations as a stand alone do not ring as well as the French originals, which is unfortunate but inevitable. But, by god, they help with the originals immensely and this is why the bilingual book works so well - both add something to the other. Thing is I'll be reading for a good few months in that pace. But it is absolutely worth every minute.
