You can tell the author had Taylor's "Anti-Hero" on repeat for this one, haha.

Reading 1990s German gothic novels again, it's a spooky season tradition at this point.

the struggle of starting a new book with place names like plymouth and having to figure out if we're in New England or in the UK lmao. (It's New England.)

I didn't hear great things about the author's first book but this sounds *so* cool and it's exactly what I like to read. So here I go.

"I used to have a sister"
"Would she have joined the womens' movement?"

Every single plot point is clunkily derailed by "so, what about feminism?" and I'm getting sick of it.

Maybe I hyped myself up too much over the last couple years, since I wanted to read this since it came out, but it's not really working for me so far. Kind of too droll and honestly, weird choice to set a highwayman story this late in the 18th century, it keeps taking me out of the story.

I kind of don't like how lately all these historical releases repeat the same tired story beats about how much women suffered in the past. Even if it was "historically accurate", which it really often isn't, it's been done to death at this point.

This one should focus on the Icelandic sagas and the frozen mummy and all that good, interesting stuff instead.
