Okay, I'm tapping out. This is a good story, and it's challenging me in all the best ways, but it is taking so darn LONG to get to its point that I've run out of patience.

I read that it was expanded from a short story and I definitely can see it now; I may come back to this later but it will be after my patience replenishes itself and I'm ready for tons of circular narration.

Look, I know what I'm about.

The writing is fine, but the fact that most of the viewpoint characters so far are terrible men working for a vague, terrible cause is a huge turn-off. I'm giving it till the end of part one because life is too short etc, but also because hopefully then something creepy will finally happen. Or, you know, plot will actually occur.

I was expecting more creepiness, based on my experience reading The Elementals, but I think this book is more about screwy family dynamics/a Southern community in the 1920s with some supernatural aspects than it is about Ye Olde Spookiness. I'm here for it!
