Okay, I'm tapping out. This is a good story, and it's challenging me in all the best ways, but it is taking so darn LONG to get to its point that I've run out of patience.

I read that it was expanded from a short story and I definitely can see it now; I may come back to this later but it will be after my patience replenishes itself and I'm ready for tons of circular narration.
