The book began with a dramatic retelling of an ambush a Special Forces soldier was involved in. Quickly though, it flashed back to his departure from the USA. This is one of the most interesting parts of this genre. It tells of why the particular person fights and what they do prior to leaving, giving a good insight into the consciousness of the military.

The book has gone into detail on the main character, Buck. He lived a posh life in California on a wealthy estate. His life gets turned upside down when he is sold by a housekeeper to cleanse gambling debts. Buck is abused on the several legs of the journey, constantly harassed and beaten. As a testament to his strength and dignity, Buck attacks the new holders any chance he gets.

The book opens with Henrik Vanger, owner of a wealthy company, receiving a mysterious flower and his relation with a detective to decide where It came from. As the book progresses, the flower is not brought up again. In fact, the topic is entirely dropped after the beginning chapter. The reader does not figure out what the flowers refer to until the end of the book where he finds out they come from the missing girl.

Hester's scarlet letter is a constant reminder of her adulterous actions. Hester quickly embellished the "A" showing her independence from the Puritans. Later in the novel, the perception of the "A" changes from negative to positive. The older citizens still held the same negative ideals, however the new citizens see the "A" to stand for advice due to the help she gives to everyone despite the hate she received.
