The book has gone into detail on the main character, Buck. He lived a posh life in California on a wealthy estate. His life gets turned upside down when he is sold by a housekeeper to cleanse gambling debts. Buck is abused on the several legs of the journey, constantly harassed and beaten. As a testament to his strength and dignity, Buck attacks the new holders any chance he gets.
