Ack — I don’t know that Simon will be redeemable. He’s genuinely a bad person: jealous of others’ success, physically and mentally abusive, wanted to drain a little boy dry. Not to mention his sexual sadism and deviancy.

More generally, the story is engaging, even if only because of the shock of Simon’s debauchery.
