Reading it a second time and feel like so much smarter now lol. It really makes me think about how writing and culture/politics intersect, and the necessity to do so.

Pheby got on my nerves but this book was great. Although I wished she chose herself instead of a life of slavery/misery.

On God I'm getting through this so fast! It's so good but I do wish I felt more connected with the main character. still feel emotionally connected to the story overall.

Feeling all the feelings. I do feel a little distant from the main character, but this book is very gripping. I read a quarter of it in less than 2 hours. I'm already ready to punch the white mistress in the face cause girrlllll whatttt?! Now I'm on Part 2

Wow it ended faster than I expected. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and will definitely read this as a resource when re-reading some Toni Morrison fiction. EXTREMELY illuminating. And as someone that values spirituality in my writing, it was very interesting to me as well.

Took a break on this a while ago because with how bad depression got, learning Spanish while being in the states triggered me. (I miss Colombia and Panama SO MUCH) It's so hard to want to learn Spanish and not get the chance I had during Spanish school to practice it and talk with locals. It just makes me sad.

My goodness. I had to pause the ebook and order a physical copy. I'll be referring back to this in my writer future. I am struggling with my relationship to writing, and whether it's something I'm doing to "get back that applause" of reading my first short story in public. So idk. I love it and it inspires me, but it's consuming me, confusing me, boring me. But I don't know how to let it go. Or if I should.

Feeling drawn to the themes I missed in Bluest Eye - like Western Christianity being needed in TANDEM with African spirituality in order to truly heal us.
I am also enthralled by her "village mindset", and how that empowered her as a storyteller in her adult life.

I am wondering more about her spirituality, and I want to know more of that mentality after her Methodist and Catholic background.

Ugh this book drove me crazy. Some moments stunned me in my seat with its beauty, but most of this was a slog for me, jumping from mundane event to mundane event without any emotional meaning or consequences to those events. It was so boring to go through, then there would be a beautiful, viscereal moment that was so authentic to the Black American experience, then fall into no meaning beyond its presence.

This book is so slow and not really good. It can't stay focused and the writer keeps going on diary entries - I mean tangents - I mean passionate ramblings that has nothing to do with the premise of this book! Not sure if I'll finish it.

These stories are doing things to me. I'd be surprised if these writers didn't see major success in the future. The places I am being transported to is sensational. what a great issue to start reading this mag

This book is WILD! It's so reminiscent of Their Eyes Were Watching God and I love reading books with the wild women archetype. I love the main character so much!!! But these men aint shit (but I like Tate anyway but Chase can eat dicks)

Book is getting boring again.

This is so trippy about all the talk about zombies and it's crazy how deep Zora went with her research. She was so courageous.

will definitely pursue being a more consciously emotionally mature person after this, but felt a lot of confirmation in some of my decisions for better self-care with this one.

Had a boring section about the past president but I'm on the chapter about voodoo and phew! It's SO intriguing.

This book is so good! I feel like I'm right there with Zora during her experience on the islands. It's crazy to think she wrote Their Eyes Were Watching God during this time. I can see why! Having access to this free-flowing creative space was such a blessing.

I'm learning about remedies, customs, and it doesn't feel boring.

Had some good little nuggets. Wish it went more in-depth with the case studies. Not as "joyous" as I thought it would be, but solid and quick read.

I just know a lot of this already, but it's definitely hitting on those one-two spots. It's definitely nice to have a full refresh from a different perspective. But will be glad to be done with this one since it's a bit too easy.

This book has tugged on so many of my heart strings! I've cried and gotten turned on at the same time with this one. I had to binge it. One of the finest romance writers of this generation next to Tia Williams.

Slowing down a bit but still wildly entertaining. Are there more books with them? I'm so ready to get wrapped into their world, and explore more of them as a couple and not solely in longing.

This book is giving me heart palpitations I swear!!! That sex scene though. Omg, probably one of the best modern romance sex scenes I've read in a while (up there with Seven Days in June)
