Took a bit to get into this one, the way the protagonist's narrative is written is very stilted. The sentences are structured. Like this.

It's unusual, & a bit off putting, but once you get into the meat of the story you notice it less.

I just got to part of the book which was so gripping I couldn't put it down, then had to force myself to because it was getting close to 11pm lol

Getting the flu while reading a book about a deadly respiratory supervirus has been an interesting combination 😂

The character work in the first part of this hefty book is SO good, & where Stephen King's writing just shines.

Trying this again, but as the audiobook this time & with the accompanying Kingslingers podcast. Absolutely love their chapter analyses, I get so much out of it. It reminds me of my fave English classes in high school.

I generally enjoy these novellas, some more than others. This is #10, & the opening feels like it won't be a fave but the fantasy component has only just kicked in.

The author always focuses on diversity & representation, but it does feel shoe horned in sometimes. This may also be because the style of writing feels more tween than young adult, so possibly a bit "young" for my palette now. But only 4h audiobook!

Yay Paul finished the audiobook sooner than I expected. Usually I have a break in between these books but I'm so locked in, can't wait to see what happens. A longer ride this time at a bit over 28h

Can't remember who I got this one from, maybe Indy?

There's been too much fat shaming already, but I suspect the point is the protagonist isn't likeable.

May become a dnf

So excited to crack into this Audible audio, being up there as one of the best fantasy books I've read the last few years.

And very helpfully the author wrote an "interlude" chapter as a refresher, but in such a way that it was seamless with the story. More authors need to do this for epic fantasy series.
