Such an honest, on the ground look at what families in Gaza have been going through (and are still going through!) for decades. I am reading it one poem and chapter at a time--the intense reality and tragic events can be overwhelming. However, Alareer's prose so humanizes Palestinian victims of Israel's barbarous acts that I am drawn back to the book nearly every day.

Though the book covers Coates's visit to Senegal, South Carolina and Palestine but is really about writing and racism especially regarding the genocide in Palestine.

A stark look at life in the occupied West Bank and the hardships and human rights abuse the IDF inflicts on the Palestinian living in the occupied territories. This was all going on way before Oct. 7, 2023 and shows the real aganda of Israeli Zionists.

Almost halfway through this tome, a deep and arcane read. Obviously, one of my favorite authors, Kurt Vonnegut, was influenced by Joyce and THIS BOOK. I can't help but note the similarities in style, especially in Slaughterhouse Five and Breakfast of Champions.

Critique of police and their underlying motivations: excellent
Addressing the underlying rationale for police, such as property rights and supporting a hierarchical, capitalist based, exploiting economy: not as good
But hey, I have not reached the end of the book yet.

Didn't have a chance to respond to a book reading group's comments that defended their describing this book as a "rant" and that the author seemed angry. This is actually a very scholarly (and sometimes dry) retelling of history, including Native People's point of view. Some white people just can't stand to take an honest look at the way the USA was established--built on the genocide of First Nations.

Had to return it to the library but I plan on buying it. Dunbar-Ortiz explains well the mythology America is based on, exposing why many white Americans ignore or deny the racist and genocidal underpinnings of this country. I'll write more as I read more.

Radical thinking on US economics, explained well so far. Really shows what a farce Milton Friedman's theories are.
Chapter 3 lays out clearly why the US deficit is a myth. Reviewers on this site who use the rhetorical "magical thinking" critique of Kelton's book obviously did not read this chapter. The case she makes there is ironclad.

Haven't read it but have heard Don Fitz talk about Cuba's health care system many times. Cuba has one of the best health care systems in the world: free to all, clinics in every neighborhood, preventative health care is the status quo and they are up-to-date on technology. The author has been to Cuba several times and his daughter went to the medical school in Havana, so he has an inside view of this system.

Spain, 1936: A loose alliance of Socialists, Trade Union members, anarchists, Communists and Republicans (those who are a part of or support the democratically elected national government) create an egalitarian state of empowered workers, liberated women and semi-autonomous communities that works for liberty for all. Evans tells the well documented story that, unfortunately ended tragically. More later.

I met author Noa Baum. This book shows a much deeper side of her than I saw when she performed at the St. Louis Storytelling Festival. A compelling, honest story.
