I've tried twice, now, to read this book. It is just too heavy. Maybe especially for a summer book during a purported pandemic... Too sad; too tragic, too many technical and historical details. Too too !!!

Decided not to finish this book. Goodreads recommended it to me because I enjoy a lot of travel memoirs, but this road trip was with two men from the UK who seem to be in their twenties, and I just can’t relate to them. Although they don’t seem like bad kids, they do approach their choices like boys in their twenties, and I just don’t find it interesting. A disappointment.

You'll almost need to take notes to stay on top of this one. It's a road map of clues, consisting of the past, the present, and the narrative of about a dozen characters, also themselves past and present. Keep a notepad nearby.

This book did not grab me. I got about 20 pages in. The timing might be wrong for me, or I might have had some different expectations of her premise. I get the impression that her suppositions are now a little dated (this was written in 2013), although some of her case studies might be useful to skim through. It also creeped me out, just a tad, to see that it was published by Weinstein Books...

Reading this because I kind of enjoyed "The Missing Place" but at page 116, I am finding it dragging. I am finding the character of the father bothersome, as he seems to be all over the place. I wonder if I'll make it through; sometimes an author has to hit her stride in a story...

In 17th Century Persia, a young woman and her mother become impoverished when her father dies unexpectedly. She uses her skill as a rug weaver to regain their footing in the world, but is then reducing her chances of being married. Be creative and independent (in 17th century Persia, remember) or put all her talent into creating a dowry so she can marry?

When I was in an experimental, alternative high school program, I read Beagle's book, The Last Unicorn, and wrote a letter to him, asking him to come speak to us. He did, although I was ever-so-ignorant about interview etiquette. He was gracious and easy-going, though; very likely it wasn't a big deal to him to hop on his motorcycle and drive to Pali Alto from his home in San Francisco...

Fascinating! I've been able to verify the author's mention of historical people, customs, and political atmosphere. The French Revolution! The Tom Woods Show (podcast) also has an episode about the revolution ("The Reign of Terror", episode 453) which I found really interesting. Politics tend to go in cycles and I am reading this with an eye on our current budding revolution.

This.book is fascinating, and as I read and take note of historical names, phrases, and political facts, it's fun to look them up - they are indeed accurate. The French Revolution was really something; I didn't learn this in school. Also listened to Tom Woods (The Tom Woods Show on podcast) talk about it.

Turns out this is aimed at people who attend meetings and lectures. Not really getting ideas out of it that I can use in art books, as I previously wondered. It was worth a try, kind of interesting.

I found this book in a thrift store and chose it because I've read several other things by Wally Lamb, and know him to weave an involved tale. This is a nonfiction work and consists of writings by women prisoners at York Correctional Facility in Niantic, Connecticut, during a time that Lamb agreed to lead a writing workshop there. I always find it interesting to learn how a person ends up getting derailed in life.

What a fun and stimulating book. It's actually a living thing...a community of its readers. It's interactive in that you can add a specified text address to your phone, follow the prompts, and get responses. Can't wait to have further playful surprises come up.

A wonderful book. Great explanations; wonderful photos of various steps. Clear instructions. Arne and Carlos are so sweet! You can also check them out on YouTube, and one of their vids is even about the Idea Books. I've made three now and am working in them with embellishments. Have a fourth one in the works. Right in my wheelhouse; love it.

Not totally sure I feel up to reading Doig right now. His sentences are so long and complicated, I find myself constantly backtracking over the last dozen lines, parcing out the lengthy sentences! I know Doig is a gifted and prolific writer and I have enjoyed many of his stories but this, a "memoir in reverse"deduced from his mother's letters, might not be a bit complicated for my "spring" reading taste.
