Eh. It’s not great. First of all it’s taken me way too long to read this and secondly, I don’t really care about any of the characters.

Call me basic or simply orbit I just had to start the second book pronto

If you liked “Remington Steele” back in the day, than you’ll like this book!

Okay. So I was perusing my local library shelves in search of my next read and as usual, I stick to a time honored theme of “Victorian setting/feisty heroine and possibly, a slow burn romance. Pretty basic stuff. So I randomly picked up this book and decided to give it a whirl. So far, so glad. Why? Because the author doesn’t shy away from “real world” issues.

Oopsy, a teeny misstep Mr. Thomas. Chicago is never “humid” in April. Otherwise, I’m still reading and enjoying this tale.

So far, so pretty good. I like reading about how authors think. What motivates them, why they write what they write, etc. And that is pretty much what is going on in the book so far. Two important points: first is that Scot Thomas does fat shame a lot in this book. Shame on him. Not cool, Scot. And second, he spoils the damn plot to one of my favorite horror movies!

Is this literary perfection? Nope. Is this an exciting, plot driven experience? Hardly. But this nice little story is exactly what I need/want right now.

The book is okay, pretty good. Here’s the thing, the main character has been living in bad/hellish conditions even before moving into the weird haunted house, so all the weird and freaky things happening now are just like, whatever.

Honestly I don’t know how far into the book I am. I’m listening to it on Audible and supposedly on Chap 19. So I’m still trying to decide whether or not I like the main female character. She is, on the one hand, completely opposite to a character that I could like and cheer for but she does have a certain sense of (unhinged) determination and certainty which I grudgingly admire.

I’m listening to this book. Can’t quite figure out what page number I’m on. I only know that I’m on Chapter 16. So far, so good, in an annoying, dislikable main character way.

This book feels like a gentle hug. Not too tight, not too light but just right.

I’m interested enough to finish the story. Yes, it’s obvious by page 31 “who done it” and the romance piece is very slow and deliberate but the writing is fine and the plot is moving along at a good pace, so there’s that.

Ooooohhh, okay. This just jumped from a perfectly respectable 3 star to almost a 3.75. Wasn’t expecting that to happen. Let’s see if this story can stick the landing.

Still enjoying this entertaining story. However, in all fairness, I may not be gauging this book fully. As I am reading it via audiobook, I am not giving the story my full attention. How do you honestly review something when you’re not fully paying attention?

Ok, so I’m trying to embrace the inner romance girly in me…but is this the book to help? Hmmm, not sure. Once again, the writing is only okay/meh. The MFC is spunky but silly. The neighbor guy is “hot”, the soon to be MMC is also “hot”, can we please come up with some other adjectives and for the love of god, get this girl a good vibrator!

So far, so good. This is like that Netflix series “Enola Holmes” which I did enjoy.

Huh. I actually like this. What is it? The writing? The character development? The world building? Could it be….all of the above???

I was in search of something to listen to and came across this story. Irene (the Queen!) Adler is masquerading as a young male student at Oxford and yes, her roommate is none other than Sherlock Holmes! How could I resist?!

Huh. Who knew that I would really like fantasy battle scenes, ‘cause this bad boy starts out in battle and has yet to really take a break.

The author is trying R E A L L Y hard to tell a tale of romance, fantasy, heist, found family, et al. There is a lot going on and frankly, it’s not being done that well.

I’ve been slowly getting through this audiobook. It’s not so much the story, more the fact that I’m not a huge audiobook reader

So far so good. I am quite captivated by McConaghy’s writing. It has a sparseness to it that fits the story well.

Falling to a 4 star because I’m getting a bit bored and we don’t want that.

So far, so good. The FMC, Odessa, is not too limpid or stupid, so yeah for that. The MMC (?) is The Guardian and he smirks a lot. Like, a lot. There are scary monsters, secrets and a journey, and so far I’m fairly entertained.
