The logical conclusion of Calvinism is that God authors sin. But God abhors sin, and He cannot do what goes against His nature, just as He cannot lie, break His promises, etc.

Hunt’s point is that if God IS love, as the Bible tells us, why would He take pleasure in predestining souls to hell if He has the power to save them? “What love is this?” Hunt asks.

Oof. Elliot discusses how certain “non-traditional marriages” can be successful.

“We watched how well polygamy worked in the tribe.” As Elizabeth puts it, the husband was “faithful to his [three] wives as far as anyone knew.”

Another example: her hired girl arrives from India with her 11-year-old husband. Apparently they were perfectly happy despite their youth (and undisclosed potential age gap).

I wish every Christian would read the introduction to this book.

Definitely some things I don’t agree with. I’m neither Presbyterian nor Calvinist, so I don’t agree with some of the underlying theology. But much of the practical application has been good, particularly regarding education, which Wilson is known for.

I don’t think anyone can read this book to the end without becoming a slightly better person in some small way. There’s too many good characters to not pick up one of their good habits or traits. (Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise” -Prov. 13:20)

After 26 chapters, I now have a 1 year old running around the house chanting “Oh, Marilla. Oh, Marilla!”

These stories are really hit or miss for me. But the ones that hit it have lodged themselves into my mind, and I find myself pondering them throughout the week.

Reading this has actually been a revolutionary experience for me.

For those who are nervous to read this extra-biblical text, Lumpkin poses the question: if a book is mentioned within the scriptures, is that book not worthy of attention?

Beautiful writing, grotesque stories. So overall definitely my vibe.

Colin is the absolute worst. He’s a grumbling narcissist and I’m actually scared for the author if she genuinely believes she has created the charming, kind character she keeps saying he is. Over and over we hear how charming and sweet and kind and perfect this man is all while he’s manipulating and talking down to Penelope his fiancée. I’m ill.

My husband bought this book at a thrift shop years ago, mainly for the cover art, but he was pleasantly surprised with the stories. It wouldn’t have been my pick back then, but I’ve recently been interested in sci-fi/dystopian fiction, particularly with a female author. We’ll see!

Every scene is at least 3x too long.

BTW, not every line of dialogue needs a description. I don’t always need to know when an eyebrow was raised or a head tilted slightly to the left.

This is the first time I’m reading a bridgerton book after watching a season or two of the show. I’m scared something spicy is going to happen so pray for my soul.

*sigh* no modern Christian book is complete without the obligatory section on race relations.

Each chapter I wait for the next Malcolm Gladwell quote.

The author recalls her young daughter once asking, what makes being a girl better than being a boy? The author was stumped. How many of us would be able to give a good answer? I’m not sure that I could come up with a good one on the spot.

How far has our culture fallen, that we (I assume it’s not just me and the author) can’t think of one good, unique facet of womanhood.

It’s a painful pleasure to read a children’s book for the first time as an adult while knowing that you’d have loved it as a child.

I genuinely didn’t realize there was such controversy surrounding the identity of the angel of the Lord in the Old Testament, which is why I’ve been so confused why Heiser has spent what feels like half the book defending his take on it.

“But at last all was prepared and arrangements made to send the boys to a small school near the city gate kept by an old man who had in past years gone up for government examinations and failed.”

Lol. Some things are universal.

I causally started rereading this book during Christmas break and I forgot how deeply in love with it I (still) am. Every sentence is so rich and perfectly worded. It really is the perfect book.
