I just started the book but already, I am enjoying it. I haven't learned a lot about the characters but I feel like I am being brought into their home and being introduced to their lifestyle. It is very comfortable. Francie, the main character is kind and I am very intrigued by what she will get into. In the book it says it is split up by book 1, 2, 3, so I a, very interested in how that will change the story.

Janie has left Killicks and has moved onto the next man, Starks. Starks was an extremely charming man that she fell for very quickly. He starts to let Janie work at the store but becomes very controlling of everything that she wants to do. She is allowed to work, but cannot engage with anyone. He limits her socially and controls her as if she is property.

Janie goes onto what she knows about her mother. Her mother was always a really good person but she was raped and impregnated with Janie, the main character. After Janie was born she began drinking and going out. Janie marries Killicks but she doesn't love him. Her grandmother dies and the world changes. She meets a new man that she starts seeing. He wants her to go with him to a new town of all people of color.

The very beginning of "Their Eyes Were Watching God" is a bit confusing. It starts with Janie, walking home after a year and a half of being gone. They describe her body. It goes to a group of women, all sitting on the porch and gossiping about her. Pheoby, Janie's best friend and they go to Janie's and talk. We are given a backstory of how Janie grew up. We learn about her grandmother and her life as a slave.
