Tolkien always lost me in his insistence to explain his world’s lore down to the minute detail. Like, bruh, just put it in the index and let me enjoy the plot!! But, I’ve been on an old school fantasy kick recently and decided to put on this audiobook at work to help scratch the itch.

Ok, I get the hype. David Grann is as good of a storyteller as he is an investigative journalist. The way he brings this crew and their story back to life through a narrative that is entirely based on logbooks, journals, letters, and court records is insane. I’m like one chapter away from singing sea shanties myself.

I always intended to read this series but never got to as a child. But at long last,I have decided to give the series a shot. Thus far, I’m pleased to say that I am thoroughly enjoying it! I find the writing to be charming(despite the “horrors” of the story) and I really love these characters. Wish I could just finish it in one go, but I’ve got essays to write and tests to study for.
