Ok, not to expose how behind I am in this read but on page 95 is the line “Pemulis, who can stand about ten seconds of communal silence tops, clears his” unbolded for everyone or is my copy of the book just tweaking?

This first scene(?) from YEAR OF THE DEPEND ADULT UNDERGARMENT—an actual masterclass in the stream of conscious writing style. 🙌

Watch out, Virginia Woolf.

Thoughts and prayers pls

Also—just an immediate observation that I am way too mentally exhausted right now to look up myself, but is Hal being named Hal a reference to the best character (totally unbiased opinion) in the Shakespeare canon?

Christopher Antimie Haha can't wait to get home and see which passage this is about

Christopher Antimie Looks like it was the Gately passage. I had a pretty similar reaction when I first read that. So strange yet compelling

Christopher Antimie And, of course, brutal

Grace Cimpan FACTS

Grace Cimpan This may be more from my current cold than last night’s reading session, but my head is still spinning 😵‍💫

Grace Cimpan Also why did I spend 9 pages last night reading the filmography of James O. Incandenza?

message 7: by Grace (new) - added it

Grace Cimpan I just wanted to chill last night but David keeps getting weirder 😭

Christopher Antimie Lol the filmography is the best part! Ok no, but the Gately thing was the first passage that really got my attention when I was reading through. It's definitely one of those points where I think you're supposed to just set it down for a bit and have a break. As for why you would read through 9 pages of obscure, avant garde art film, is Fun with Teeth or Every Inch of Disney Leith not incentive enough?

Grace Cimpan lol our brains work very differently. I was totally on board with this book until we hit the Gately passage. Then I was just lost and wondering wth this book is. Tbf, I wasn’t feeling very well and had looked forward all day to curling up with my book and getting cozy for the night… clearly, Infinite Jest was not the right book to get cozy with 💀

message 10: by Grace (new) - added it

Grace Cimpan But yes, the filmography was great (I just like whining)…I especially appreciated Sperber’s intense hatred for Incandenza’s work

Grace Cimpan The man was on a mission and I respect the hustle

Christopher Antimie That's pretty tough lol. At least you can appreciate the Sperber bit after the Gately thing and the passage about the face in the floor. And like your Middlemarch comment, I'll hold off on expanding on some things.

*Also, correction to my previous comment: it should have been apres garde not avant garde*

Grace Cimpan Lol honestly, I'm probs going to have to reread that whole section again. I feel like I missed a lot of details in my confusion/impatience haha

Christopher Antimie Which section? If you mean the filmography section, I wouldn't worry too much about the finer details for now. But it wouldn't be entirely fruitless if you chose to reread it.

message 15: by Grace (new) - added it

Grace Cimpan No, no, I might skim over the filmography section again, but I need to reread the Gately section. 😅

Christopher Antimie Yeah no point going over the filmography atm. I could say more but I'm trying to refrain from influencing your experience
