up to page 92 and the descriptions of the author's sex with young boys has gotten graphic. Well he said he was writing pornography. It's so banal really it's hard to continue. I suspect the Internet that now provides the full spectrum of sexual possibilities has rendered this work to the quaint category.

I have not gotten far, but i's not good. Without preamble we are introduced into an impoverished family where the narrator is masturbating a small boy in his pants. The altitude of the family is unease but acquiescing. The narrator sees his subjects as morons and idiots. One might compare this with Andre's Gides humanistic attitude toward his playmates.
If this continues, I shall toss it.

'Fraid I bogged down at some point, maybe it was the early part, all famila, I did read something by Don Bachardy which filled in the LA years nicely. I read "The Hustler" which Usherwood said he loved dearly so that gave me some insight into the queer 30s Berlin. Somehow I just couldn't work up the enthusiasm I had for Wilde, Gide, and Bowles
Maybe I'll pick it up in part 2.

This is a slender book and actually a recounting of Gide's friendship with Wilde at their infrequent meetings. Curiously, the meeting in Baskra, Algeria, is shortened considerably from Gide's auto-bio and neglects to mention the night Gide and Wilde procured the companionship of two boys for the night. Gide at the time of this writing had grown more circumspect so I anticipate no further revelations.
