This story is more disturbing as due to the era, so many homeless children. Their parents being poor either hanged for whatever their crime or, sent to Botany Bay. The children as young as three, are left to fend for themselves and someone is picking them up and brutalising them in unimaginable ways and then burying them.

History is so very interesting and more so when the author is invested as his ancestors are part of that era.
Its a very easy flowing story, I was drawn in from the first page and now for book two!

Now that was a good wee bulge,” A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows”!
The mystery of what happened to Roger Mackenzie’s father.
Every sentence in this story made you really like Jerry aka Jeremiah and what he went through, disappeared to and after that. No, you’ll not get that wee bit out of me! Read the book! Now for the next wee story…

Yes, I can see why the Lord John series started, just finished the shorty that began it. Back when it was written, I’m sure readers were saying, “more please, more”!
Like all Diana’s books, the snippet has been researched, the conversations so full bodied and the imagery of the era, that you can fully envision all, the visuals just come. An enjoyable read!

For historical fiction, I rank it 10/10, the three female characters are each so likable, powerful and vulnerable. You laugh with them, feel their struggles, celebrate their seriously hard earned accomplishments during WWII doing their bit by breaking German codes. Bletchley Bletherings - Bletchley Park is infested-not by mice but Yanks. Pestus Americansus can be identified by its unnaturally white teeth & Camel cigs

Mold, when you stop to think of it I really know more than large Happy Families if you could make yourself small enough - like Alice, you probably be able to hear them laughing and singing their mouldy songs teasing one other playing harmless moldy practical jokes and swapping moldy ghost stories.

Look I'm the police, '' And we could, you know, do the whole thing, but you'd get arrested and blah blah blah and stuff, whereas I just want a chat. So what's the point of all... This? '
No-neck thought about this for a moment, before grunting and shifting enough to let me squeeze past. That's how real men settle their differences, through reasoned discussion and dispassionate analysis. He farted as I reached the..

I accidentally read the third book before the second, it completely threw me. You really have read in order to let the characters grow on you, to let the magical investigation happen! I love and miss London and Ben Aaronovitch is so detailed in his discriptions you really get a feel of the areas. Enjoying the mystery surrounding all of the jazz musicians deaths and more. Grizzly bits, need to be read to imagine!!

This is a book that NEVER gives way to anything nice, I'll not be going anywhere near Old Castle thank you very muchly!
It's an addictive read, a serious page turner and I've made it my breakfast read as it's a thick and heavy book. Loving the characters Misfits for their various reasons. Sorry, not giving anything away about the book but hey, anything Stuart McBride is a guarantee put the Do Not Disturb sign out!

I couldn't gel with the writing style for the first few chapters but at the same time I was hooked.
Slowly being pulled into Ali's life, wondering what happened when she was 12 as she throws snippets throughout the chapters, then what happened to her marriage and finally what happened to Ali. Waking with a nasty bump on her head, injuries and blood?... No memory...!
Yes, that hook is pulling me in!!

The word feral comes to mind when I think of Mallory, This quote says it all!
"She spent most of her childhood on the streets stealing breakfast lunch and dinner and her shoes. She's fearless she thinks there isn't a human being she can't outsmart or outshoot. The pity is that she's so freaking smart and a great shot, beautifully equipped to do the job scary isn't it Charles."

Oh and then I'll need to start buying the collection from the beginning!!
