Maggie and I moved to the paranormal section. I wasn’t sure how long we’d been there by the time Lukas found me. He had five books in hand.

“What did you find?” I smiled at his collection. He showed me the titles. “I see. Two books about prolific serial killers, the horrors of war, and two real-crime dramas. Aren’t you just a little ray of darkness?”

“You’re judging me, and you’re reading about unicorns?”

He paused, considering. “Might need to work on the name of the operation, but you get the idea. Let’s do this thing!”

The bell rang.

“After school gets out,” Nick said hastily.

Seth was at his locker, banging his head against it. Nick reached up and put his hand between Seth’s forehead and the locker.

“Hey,” Nick said. “Do you want me to kill him? Because I will.” He was very serious about this. He’d learned how on the internet before Dad had tightened the parental controls. He just needed to find some sharks.

“No. Then you’d go to jail. I’d visit you, but it wouldn’t be the same.”
