Good grief.

The prologue was almost unreadable in its infantilising description of whoever Ciara (an adult woman and John's wife, CONTINUALLY referred to in extremely childish terms) is. If the rest of the book has the same tone, I think it's going to be a slog to finish.

Boom.

Such a hopeful, optimistic tone for such a bleak setting. I liked this one.

Kaa-Rokaan by GMB Chomichuk & James Gillespie

Put off pretty quickly by the Time Of Old Doublespeak ("One of the Vani had gone BLOOD MAD. He had killed the SPEAK KING and sold the man's seven children to a southern slaver for MOONWATER and a sword made of SKYMETAL."), but also had one of my favorite lines:

"The roar pierced Rokaan's traditions against fear, and he ran."
Love it.

Six pages left in the epilogue but I'm too tired to finish.
Done by Monday. Then there's time for a couple 2024 bonus books!

The shipment of cyanide has arrived. It's been nearly half a century and it makes me feel sick to read this last stretch.

Am I at the half way point yet?

Even a few pages of progress is progress. The next chapter is called The Writing On The Wall. This book is such a hard read. The tone of a newspaper article and the size of an old metropolitan phone book, not to mention the stomach-turning content, this book needs so much of my focus!

I'll finish tonight. What to read next?
