Two chapters in and I’m already struggling mightily with this book. Not giving up yet, but I thought I would take a break after two chapters which isn’t a good sign.

Head over to my substack to follow along with my chapter-by-chapter commentary for as long as I can stick with the story….

I don’t usually leave mid book reviews, but I feel compelled to now. This barely passes the 100 page test I use, because much of the pros is a tireless slog of world building and confusing magical systems. And The enmity between Harrow/Gideon is very cringe (more so bc I can guess where this relationship will go) but I like Gideon enough as a character and this book comes highly recommend, so we’ll see.

If you were an artist Paris, Montmartre was where you came to starve and it was Pierre Lessard who kept you from it.

I feel like I've read a lot yet I think I just get to the "shipwrecked" part. While interesting, it seems a bit slow to get to the meat of the story and right now seems like a lot of backstory.
