This book is so goddamned long. It has started getting good a quarter of the way in, but I don’t understand why epic fantasy is always so long. For those of us who can’t skim read or speed read, it’s such a haul. Do people who love them just skip whole sections, like anything that isn’t dialogue?

I think I’m going to love this series.

It’s amazing how much I have *not* gotten into this book by now. It sounds so good in concept.

I’m not sure if it’s Evanovich’s politics or the Burg’s or most of her readers, but all the interesting characters seem to have the same right-wing crotchety boomer mind. Half the characters? Fine. But the echo chamber within a book is too much, especially when it doesn’t feel parodic. And there was a good chance for this book to be more self-reflecting, such as when Stephanie says she’s in her 50s.
