HUMAN WISHES by Robert Hass was published when I was 22 years old. This collection of poetry has been one of the greatest influences upon my own work. Hass' poetic storytelling with sprawling expression and sometimes associative links opened me to a much different style of poetry, at least in these poems. Two standouts are "A Story About the Body" and "Privilege of Being." I go back to this work often.
