i hate that i’m not loving this so far considering that both of kitamura’s other books factor into my 2026 favourites

currently fighting with transcription for my favourite lerner🙇‍♂️

on a ben lerner kick, incredibly strong start!

i blinked and it’s 1am and i’ve somehow read 218 pages in one sitting…rachel reid what have you done to me

ben lerner is tapped into a higher intellectual and spiritual wavelength few writers have touched, so i fear i’m not fully understanding all that i read but i’m trusting the process 🌀🌀🌀

i’m in too deep to quit, but it’s just so unfortunately mid and i’m almost mad i don’t see in it what other people do

i think i understand the sports romance hype now and i am scared for myself

i just rewatched this show again so you know i had to finally pick it up (naturally i fucking love it ❤️)

hm i wish this followed a broader cast of characters as i don’t find them that interesting, partly because they’re all low-concept, vague stories🤷‍♂️ the writing is okay but i’m not wowed like i thought i’d be?

it’s been like two years since i last read a short story collection, hopefully this will get me back into them!

romantic, depressive, sickening…an incredible work of literature really!

this book is impossible to track down, but somehow the uni library had a copy so i have to read it before i graduate in a few weeks and lose access to this rare treasure (it’s incredible so far!!!)

the pen was blazing when she wrote this collection

i have learned so much in such few pages!!! i cannot wait to go and research more of the concepts/texts once i’m done

unbelievable control of language and tone, and in-line with the two non-fiction books i’m reading - i couldn’t have picked this up at a better time!

retract my original statement, once i broke past the titular essay it has been an incredible commentary on american excess and cultural (non-)participation…her ability to capture the abstract feelings of particular places (no matter how wide) is like no other !!!

there’s no doubt that didion is a great writer, i just wish i had greater knowledge of the subjects she writes about as i’m feeling some fundamental disconnect ?

this one seems really interesting from the introduction, i’m hyped !!!

hm i’m gonna give this another chapter or so before deciding whether to quit, it’s very male and the characters are talking about themselves from the third-person at points…

you’re dropped into a world where the characters are fully actualised (as people and as friends), but not necessarily on the page as of yet🤷‍♂️

part three was markedly better, i still wish these artworks were real so that it isn’t all so abstract

the reread has commenced, i’m enjoying it even more the second time thus far🙇‍♂️

i’m not quite sure what to make of the second part, its ambiguities are kind of frustrating as it’s simultaneously specific and non-specific

oh, and i wish we were able to see the paintings cusk writes about (again, in frustratingly ambiguous detail) to make sense of it a little more

never has a book made me cry in the first ten pages but okay !!!

hm i like it, but i’m also struggling with its supposed intensity because some of the language feels comically out of place…i’m not sure how to describe it?

i can’t believe how young qiu miaojin was when she wrote this, a truly unstoppable force of literature
