While I was writing an update for Forty-Two Places Fans about Douglas Adams' London...IT ARRIVED!

The UPS driver just walked up and dropped it off as if it was a normal package and not the culmination of years of work and worry.

The whole point of having it rushed to me was to do an unboxing video. Filming is scheduled for Saturday.

TWO DAYS. It will taunt me for TWO DAYS...

Finally got to a VERY USEFUL, action oriented segment of the book…for someone else. I don’t share the hang ups and insecurities this book is designed to help improvisers overcome. Still, I’m sure it is helping me have more empathy and understanding for fellow performers coming from a different place.

Reading on kindle and the bad formatting means a lot of words just go “missing” as I turn pages. Confusing and frustrating reading experience.

Chapter 2, Complications and Pacing

This chapter has short, specific examples of things to avoid: same scene twice, cell phones in modern books, mundane details.

Basically it boils down to Don’t Bore Your Reader.

Chapter one has been good for a few chuckles, but I was expecting a lighter, funnier tone. Instead I’m finding it negative and a bit derogatory toward (paraphrasing) ‘all those poor, inexperienced, bad writers who don’t realize how bad they are.’ So far: Meh. Know your audience. Are you trying to genuinely help new writers or deride them? I’m not sure this book knows yet what it wants to be.

Chapter 2, about specific word choice, reinforces for me why I read widely. Slowly, at a word by word level, I fall in love with the best writing. Scannable books-the cozies and the indie beach reads-are not pretenders to this crafty construction. They are not origami, where the paper matters, where the exact folds go one direction or both in precision so a final creation moves or solidifies into a perfect creation.

So excited to start my annual re-listen to Shea MacLeod’s Poison in the Pudding. Yep. I re-listen to my own audiobooks for a Holiday pick-me-up!

Slow. When it is funny, it is very, very funny. And when it is not, it is tedium.

Amusing in parts, but I’m finding it overall a dry collection of bits and pieces of letters from the era. Very hard to stay engaged when there is no narrative.

Glad this is a book of short stories as some are *so hard* to read. Excellently written; the content is hard. I know that is the point, and I will finish this book, but ugh...such horrors and triggering stuff, just in ho-hum everyday life. Not easy to read, so I don’t keep at it. I need loooooooong breaks between stories.
