Wow. Just wow. Maybe I should read more stuff of this genre. Or is this book such an outlier? Idk. It’s so freaking good.

This is really good. But it’s far from lighthearted and I need to take it slow

A little to early to say, but I’m excited - I didn’t know I could get my hands on this book this early. The start is great for me already

I am still reading this. The short stories are really good but better read a little staggered for me.

I finished Japan and the West part. I liked all three stories. I particularly enjoyed the first by Tanizaki Jun'ichirō. I am making my way through the Loyal Warriors part and I am surprised to be enjoying the second story by Mishima Yukio this much.

Okay, this stuff is good. Real good. I almost don't want to stop reading. This is probably going to be one of those books you don't want to finish just yet. And the other doesn't have a lot out yet. I really hope he write more. But then again, I am just halfway through. Plenty of space to mess it up for me.

I will grateful when the book is over and the poems are less miserable in a demeaning kind of way. I am all for miserable poetry but not into the diminishing kind when it becomes a lot. Maybe I should just read some at a time. I like "an unkind poem" and some others as well. Maybe this is what actual misery makes you write? I don't know. You could really tell Scarlet or whatever the redhead's nee really hurt him tho.

I am reading short stories to get myself going. First, Sōseki's Sanshirō's extract was so lovely to read, I am excited to read the book next.
Kōno Taeko's "In the Box" was so lovely, so poignant, and delightful. I want to read that narrative voice more. Maybe, I should check Kōno's writing more.
Murakami's "The 1963/1982 Girl from Ipanema" was great. There's a reason why I like his short stories so much.

I started reading this at the same time as other books because I thought it would be chill to read a couple of poems every once in a while and work my way through this long collection. I don't usually read big collections of poetry, so I don't know what I was thinking. Especially when I read every other poem 3 or 5 times because I like it or dislike it so much.

People are recommending this and I am not sure how I feel about it as I read it. At times I love it, other times I hate it, but then I love that it evoked that kind of hatred and discomfort in me. For some reasons, this poetry feels comfortable in its rawness and I like that I enjoy reading that. I am not sure if Bukowski is an actual dickhead or not, but I hope that his writing is ironic for I am enjoying the irony.

Bought this for retail therapy and nostalgia.
I will probably use this function to write what I think about each short story as I read. I started with Nagai Kafū's "Behind the Prison" (tr. Rubin). It was a lovely story. I am glad I read Murakami's introduction about it because that helped contextualize it. This story is a bit out of my scope tho. I solid 3-3.5 for me, even though I resonate a lot with it.

This is heavy. We need more books like this. I don’t think I’m okay. But I’m very glad to read this and to know about this. I am very grateful the author and his family are telling what happened through this book.

Okay, I want to read more consistently, so maybe this Goodreads tool would help, I hope(?).
So far I am getting undone by this book and I am just listening/reading and absorbing. I do not have the words to describe what this experience is. Unlike the last few books, I need regular breaks to continue reading.
