Hard to read now, Marguerite on the road to catastrophe

Well, I missed my train stop because of it… Is that the definition of a captivating story?

This is a slow burner. Beautifully written - I even discovered various words I didn’t know (ahem). It will take some time to finish this massive book at over 700 pages. Luckily… One disadvantage: carrying this in hand luggage is a pain because of its weight. Would authors think about that, at all? At any rate: very smug to be reading from les Éditions de minuit, a badge of honour!

Currently reading the chapters on the lobotomy and the paternalising approach both by the men in the family and the doctors. To be expected, but so sad and deeply touching.

Am personally interested because I had a grand mother who was in a psychiatric institution when I was born, 1960s. The case is very different but I find the questions raised in this essay very pertinent. Sometimes the chronology is confusing and the family ties are not always very clear but it’s illuminating and am grateful for this book

I was very aware of the negative reviews going into this, but, I love it! A book where the food is the real star: what’s not to like? Learning lots about Japanese feminism in the process.

Frankly a bit boring. I still don’t know where this is going after the trial… Not sure if I want to know either

I started the flasback and just like last time I read it, must be ten years ago, I lose interest and this is again at risk of not being finished. Why? Perhaps because the fiercely indipendent mrs Graham is now revealing herself to be a naive younster, irritatingly and predictably so. I am thinking about skipping a bit and see how the marriage goes…

Just seen this author is prolific: an addiction is in the making. There is hope I still become very fluent in Australian vernacular!
This is an amazing crime novel!
